Looking through the club roster, there aren’t many old timers left, and several people have asked me about how the club started and we got the club house, so perhaps now would be a good time to put it on paper. The marina is built on the site of an old land fill. The land fill operations were completed in 1974. Subsequently, Kohl, a developer went to the city of Brisbane and offered to develop the site in exchange for […]

Early history of Bay Area yacht clubs suggests that there were two yacht clubs named “Oakland.” It is thought that our Club has its roots in several former clubs including The Panama YC. Judge H.W. Pulcifer was elected the first Commodore, and the first meetings of the […]

Encinal Yacht Club, being the 3rd oldest yacht club on the Bay, was founded in 1890. The club was established by residents living in Alameda’s Gold Coast, on the south shore of the Island. The club became famous for its moonlit parties, regattas, and cruising events. The club encouraged family participation from the very beginning. The first clubhouse was designed and built […]
The above verbatim quotation from the preamble and first article of the Club’s charter indicates the high hopes of the five organizers (and concurrently the first Board of Directors, first slate of officers, and at the time, the entire Membership) of the new club dedicated “to promote and encourage, as its primary function and purpose, an interest in amateur yachting in all its phases…” The presumptuousness (or vision) of this founding group is further indicated by the choice of the […]
