Ischoda Yacht Club, one of the oldest clubs on Long Island Sound, was founded in 1886 as the Hallika-Wallika Club by a group of boatmen, mostly fishermen, as there was very little pleasure boating at that time. In 1901, while Norwalk celebrated its 250th birthday, it’s name was changed to the Ischoda Yacht Club, a name from the Mohawk Indian Tribe which meant “A campfire around which the peace pipe was passed”, and indicating the peaceful relations the white settlers […]

The UCLA Sailing Team is a small group of active, dedicated, and fun-loving students. We sail competitively with colleges and universities throughout California and the nation. Our district is the Pacific Coast (PCIYRA) which includes all of California and Hawaii, so most of our regattas are throughout the California coast– we travel on weekends, usually 1-2 times a month. We began competing again several years ago after a brief hiatus. The team has shown considerable improvement over each of […]
CCYC is the longest-lived yacht club in Santa Monica Bay and among the oldest on the Pacific Coast, tracing its incorporation to the depression year of 1932 on March 31, 1932. South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club has gone through many changes from its earlier foundations, retaining the spirit of yachting and having a good time. Today, we are a cross-section of the yachting community, incorporating a variety of craft from single man rowing shells and sabots to ocean racers competing […]
Looking through the club roster, there aren’t many old timers left, and several people have asked me about how the club started and we got the club house, so perhaps now would be a good time to put it on paper. The marina is built on the site of an old land fill. The land fill operations were completed in 1974. Subsequently, Kohl, a developer went to the city of Brisbane and offered to develop the site in exchange for […]
How did we get where we are today? Back in the late thirties, Dr. Jack E. Taylor and Dr. Glenn E. Thorpe, sailing friends, met on a regular basis for lunch at a restaurant overlooking Santa Monica Bay. As with all yachting types, the conversations during these lunches invariably turned to the subject of boats and boating. Before long, these men who jokingly called themselves the “End of the World Yacht Club”, were joined by Boyd “Bud” Verplank and Stratford […]
Activities started again in 1946, the first regatta in 1947 was held at the Naval Reserve Armory. Club meetings were held in various member’s houses. During February 1949 a suite was leased in the California Hotel. In January 1950 negotiations were opened with the City for a portion of beach for a clubhouse location. In July 1950 there was a “Bill of Sale” from the Union Oil Company for an old office building to be used for a clubhouse. The […]
RBYC originally began as Palos Verdes Yacht Club in 1961 by a group of Sabot sailors who lived on the Palos Verdes peninsula and launched their small 8-ft. boats over the rocks in Malaga cove. The club met in homes and school auditoriums for many years, and was considered a “paper club”. With the construction of King Harbor in Redondo Beach in the 60’s and the ownership of boats of all sizes, the membership of the club took on a […]
OCSC Sailing began in 1979, with one boat, a shed, and a simple idea: share the joy of sailing and take care of our clients the way we’d want our friends and family to be treated. Three decades later, we’re still doing the same thing. Our community has grown, but we still know our customers, and they are still our friends. The following historical sketch of the Los Angeles Yacht Club is intended to augment the wealth of information that is presented elsewhere in this book, as well as the facts and illustrations in the archives and the records of deeds engraved upon the multitude of hard won trophies. It is not intended to individually credit the great sailors, their fine ships or the selfless dedicated men who do not appear on the record, but who sailed for, or worked with, […]
Established in 1929 for the purposes of planning a powerboat race between Long Beach and San Francisco. The proposed race would be run during the San Francisco Motor Boat Show to provide advertising for the show and Northern California boating industries. The Associated Boating Industries of Northern California wrote Daniel M. Callis, Sr., a Long Beach architect active in boating and local yacht clubs requesting a Long Beach area club act as the Southern California host of the race. His […]
The club membership, I am told, is for the sole purpose of one thing: the pursuit of furthering the hobby and past time of sailing and encouraging all of the family to participate, including the “little ones.” I have also been told that those folks seeking new membership who do not sail … are not invited to join. Sailing IS very important here. All events at the club are planned or in concert with different sailing events, races, regattas, meets […]
