Our district is the Pacific Coast (PCIYRA) which includes all of California and Hawaii, so most of our regattas are throughout the California coast– we travel on weekends, usually 1-2 times a month. We began competing again several years ago after a brief hiatus. The team has shown considerable improvement over each of […]

Until Marina del Rey and King Harbor were completed in the early 1960‘s there was little moorage available for sailboatsso there was little racing. Back then the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor was behind the now demolished breakwater off the Santa Monica Pier. South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club was represented there as was one of the original ‘Snipe’ one-design fleets (they launched from their trailers on the pier with the hoist used to off load commercial fishing boats.) When the two […]
How did we get where we are today? Back in the late thirties, Dr. Jack E. Taylor and Dr. Glenn E. Thorpe, sailing friends, met on a regular basis for lunch at a restaurant overlooking Santa Monica Bay. As with all yachting types, the conversations during these lunches invariably turned to the subject of boats and boating. Before long, these men who jokingly called themselves the “End of the World Yacht Club”, were joined by Boyd “Bud” Verplank and Stratford […]

OCSC Sailing began in 1979, with one boat, a shed, and a simple idea: share the joy of sailing and take care of our clients the way we’d want our friends and family to be treated. Three decades later, we’re still doing the same thing. Our community has grown, but we still know our customers, and they are still our friends. OCSC picture of Anthony Sandberg Our Mission We teach sailing to enhance people’s inextricable link to the ocean, to […]
In January 1913, a handful of sailors met at Peterson’s Boat House at the foot of 12th Street in Oakland. They formed Oakland Yacht Club which was incorporated in December of that year. Early history of Bay Area yacht clubs suggests that there were two yacht clubs named “Oakland.” It is thought that our Club has its roots in several former clubs including The Panama YC. Judge H.W. Pulcifer was elected the first Commodore, and the first meetings of the […]
